The Jo Whiley Scent Garden

RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2017

Designed in collaboration with Kate Savill, working alongside fragrance designer Jo Malone and BBC Radio Two broadcaster Jo Whiley, we were inspired by our scent memories, the scents that transport you to a moment in time or a place that feels familiar. The sense of smell is directly linked to our memory, unlocking these memories through scent can allow you the freedom to escape, to be soothed and comforted, but at the same time reconnect with yourself and the world around you. We wanted to create a garden that showcases the power of scent and its ability to improve your mood, uplift you and make you feel good. Our scent memories of woodland walks, rain on warm paving, that lovely smell of earth and leaves from early childhood dens and freshly cut flowers created the structure of the garden, cleverly creating a social seating area and a tucked away woodland retreat. To collect the scent memories that were written on the garden wall, we talked to friends, family and connected with the public on social media, the response was over whelming, so many of us can connect a loved one with the smell of roses, sweet peas or tomatoes grown in greenhouses to name but a few.
